The Sierra Tarahumara has the largest waterfall deep of Mexico, the Piedra Volada! This surpasses Basaseachi, which at one time was the largest waterfall in the country with a drop of 246 meters, also located in this state. Both are natural jewels of the imposing Sierra Tarahumara, which protects other wonders such as the Candameña Canyon, one of the deepest in the region and the origin of the Basaseachi waterfall, located in the Basaseachi National Park.
The discovery of the Piedra Volada waterfall occurred almost by chance in 1986, when a group of explorers from Basaseachi walked for a whole day through the ravine until they reached the Cajurichi stream canyon. They were speechless when they discovered the impressive vertical wall through which the Piedra Volada waterfall flows. Although the view from the base is impressive, there are also expeditions to admire it from above, at its point of origin.
The journey to reach the upper part of the waterfall is neither easy nor short, since it involves more than two hours of walking within the Basaseachi National Park. Despite the difficulty, the route offers rewards, since along the way you can find native species such as wild boars, coa birds, cholugos (a type of badger) and other animals from the region.
Although the view from the top of the waterfall is spectacular and one of the most impressive in the entire Sierra Tarahumara, it does not allow you to observe the fall of the water. To enjoy it, it is necessary to have the assistance of expert guides and it also requires courage, since it involves hanging from a cable several meters high.
In a rappelling, an activity not recommended for amateurs due to its complexity, the descent reaches 453 meters, exceeding Basaseachi by more than 200 meters, previously considered the deepest waterfall in Mexico. The depth of Piedra Volada, almost half a kilometer, positions it as one of the largest in the world.
To reach this fascinating place, it is essential to let yourself be guided by experts and disconnect, since it is far from the city. From Chihuahua, the trip takes around four hours, while from Creel, where the Chepe train stops, the journey takes three hours.
An interesting fact about the Piedra Volada waterfall is its intermittency during the winter. The best season to appreciate it in its maximum splendor is during the rainy months, which go from July to October.
